Okinawa Prefectural Assembly’s committee protests against US helicopter crash

August 15, 2015
The Okinawa Prefectural Assembly’s special committee on U.S. military bases on August 14 unanimously approved a draft resolution in protest against a U.S. military helicopter crash in the sea off Okinawa that occurred two days earlier.

The draft resolution points out that the accident could have been a disaster involving people’s lives and properties. It condemned the accident for creating grave anxiety among local residents who have no choice but to live with military bases in their midst.

The document demands that the Japanese and U.S. governments thoroughly investigate the cause of the crash, suspend flights of the helicopter in question and ones of the same model until preventative measures are in place, and downsize U.S. military bases in the prefecture to reduce the risk of another crash.

Japanese Communist Party member of the special committee Kayo Sogi said that it is significant that the demands on the two governments were made based on the consensus of the committee.
