The Japanese Communist Party Tokyo Metropolitan Committee on June 24 issued a statement regarding the results of the June 22 Tokyo Metropolitan Assembly election.
The JCP secured 14 seats, down five seats from its pre-election strength of 19, and received 489,048 votes (12.18% of the total vote cast). The voter turnout rate was 47.59%, up 5.20 points from the previous election.
The Liberal Democratic Party suffered a crushing defeat, decreasing its seats from 30 to a record-low of 21. The Komei Party decreased its seats to 19 from the pre-election strength of 23. A local political party, “Tomin First no Kai”, for which Governor Koike Yuriko serves as a special adviser, gained an additional six, totaling 31 seats, and has become the leading party in the 127-member metropolitan assembly.
The Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan increased its seats by five to 17. The “Nippon Ishin no Kai” party lost the sole seat it had held before the election. The Democratic Party for the People and a new right-wing populist party, “Sanseito”, chalked up nine and three seats, respectively. Both parties obtained seats for the first time in the assembly. The Social Democratic and the “Reiwa” parties did not win any seats.
Regarding the election results, the JCP Tokyo organization in its statement said that although the JCP suffered a loss, it won seats in three two-member constituencies and four three-member constituencies, which was a significant achievement. The statement continued to say that in the Kitatama 3rd constituency (Chofu and Komae cities), one of the four three-member districts, the JCP regained the seat that it lost eight years ago.
The statement emphasized that the JCP in the election campaign appealed to voters to vote for JCP candidates by promising to realize a consumption tax cut which is vital to protect people’s livelihoods from rising prices and to implement measures to achieve higher wages, improve medical and nursing-care services, and tackle the soaring housing costs. The statement pointed out that the JCP election platform struck a chord with many Tokyo citizens.
The JCP statement noted that a severe verdict was given by voters, and thus the LDP and the Komei significantly reduced their seats, adding that the JCP election campaign contributed to this outcome.
The JCP statement stressed that the JCP in Tokyo will collaborate with concerned citizens, strengthen opposition parties’ cooperation, and work hard to fulfill its election promises.
