The campaign period for the election to choose 127 members of the Tokyo Metropolitan Assembly was officially announced on June 13. The voting day is June 22.

Japanese Communist Party executives and Dietmembers visited all 24 candidates’ constituencies to support them, and JCP local assemblymembers, branches, and supporters began full-scale efforts to achieve a JCP advance.

JCP Executive Committee Chair Tamura Tomoko near Shinjuku Station, JCP Central Committee Chair Shii Kazuo near Oimachi Station, and JCP Secretariate Head Koike Akira in Koto Ward gave their kick-off speeches, appealing to voters to support the JCP candidates. The JCP leadership members in their speeches called on JCP members to work to ensure a victory in keeping the 19 seats currently held by the JCP and making a further advance.

JCP EC Chair Tamura said, “I would like to make three proposals to change the metropolitan government,” presenting the following public promises: direct support from the metropolitan government for wage hikes; protection of Tokyo residents from social security cuts by the national government; and shifting the focus from a “Tokyo that makes money” to a “more livable Tokyo.”

Tamura said, “The Upper House election will take place soon after this election.” Regarding the national government foreign policy, she rhetorically asked, “Should Japan always be at the mercy of the United States?”, and appealed to the audience to cast a vote for a JCP candidate in order to establish equal, peaceful, friendly Japan-U.S. relations.
