JCP EC Chair Tamura calls for international cooperation to oppose Trump’s tariff threats

July 9, 2025
Japanese Communist Party Executive Committee Chair Tamura Tomoko on July 8, in regard to U.S. President Trump’s announcement that he will implement a 25% tariff on all Japanese imports from August, stated that Japan should seek international cooperation to block Trump’s tariff threats.

Tamura at a press conference in Tokushima City (Tokushima Pref.) said, “As many countries are facing unilateral tariff measures that the U.S. Trump administration is threatening to impose, the JCP will demand that the Japanese government seek international cooperation to oppose the threat of further tariffs.”

She pointed out that Trump has been failing to reach a consensus with not only Japan but also many other countries on tariffs because of its unilateral approach, and that criticism of the tariff policy is now growing even within the United States.

She stressed the need to press the U.S. government to fully withdraw Trump’s tariff measures through multilateral cooperation and solidarity, not through bilateral negotiations.
