JCP Akamine urges gov’t to call on Pentagon to listen to voices of victims of US military sexual crimes in Japan

Japanese Communist Party member of the House of Representatives Akamine Seiken and an Australian woman who was raped by a U.S. military serviceman in Japan urged the ministries of Defense and Foreign Affairs on September 9 to collaborate on a survey by the U.S. Department of Defense regarding sexual violence committed by U.S. military personnel stationed in Japan.

Akamine pointed out that in the DoD survey, to carefully listen to victims’ voices is vital, and demanded that the Japanese government convey this view to the U.S. side.

Officials of the two ministries in response only repeated that the Japanese government will work with the U.S. government to prevent the recurrence of U.S. soldiers’ sex crimes, and made no clear answer to Akamine’s demand.

U.S. Bloomberg News on September 4 reported that the Pentagon on September 2 announced that it will conduct a survey of U.S. military service members who committed violent crimes against Japanese nationals regarding their job performance, training performance, and criminal history.
