A parliamentary panel in discussion on the succession to the imperial throne approved a controversial draft proposal, in defiance of opposition from the Japanese Communist Party and others, as the “consensus of the legislative branch”.
The ruling Liberal Democratic Party has drafted a bill to create a crime of desecrating Japan’s national flag, which would punish acts of damaging the “Hinomaru” flag. The LDP plans to submit the bill to the current Diet session.
The United States and Iran agreed on a memorandum of understanding to bring about an immediate and permanent ceasefire, reopen the Strait of Hormuz, and establish a framework for future negotiations.
