PM Abe determined to restore 2/3 majority in Upper House to achieve constitutional revision

July 23, 2019

Prime Minister Abe Shinzo on the day after the July 21 House of Councilors election expressed his intent to restore a two-thirds majority in the chamber in order to realize his ambition to adversely revise the pacifist Constitution.

He made this remark at a press conference at the ruling Liberal Democratic Party head office in Tokyo in response to questions about the fact that in the election, the pro-constitutional revision forces of the LDP, Komei, and Nippon Ishin no Kai parties failed to obtain a two-thirds majority of the seats which is the constitutional requirement to propose amending the supreme law.

PM Abe insisted that he will continue playing a leading role for constitutional revision. Pointing out, “The so-called ‘pro-constitutional revision forces’ do not have a fixed membership,” PM Abe said that he will work to capture opposition parties’ Upper House members who will not hesitate to respond to the ruling party’s call for discussing constitutional amendments.
