Fire occurs at hazmat facility in US Kadena base in Okinawa

June 23, 2020

The U.S. Air Force 18th Wing based at the U.S. Kadena base in Okinawa on June 22 made public that a storage building for hazardous materials on the premises of the base caught fire.

According to the 18th Wing, fire occurred at around 9 a.m. on the day. The cause of the fire is not known and no injuries were reported. The U.S. military, however, did not provide detailed information about the materials stored in the building and the impact of the fire on areas outside the base.

The Japanese Defense Ministry’s local bureau was informed later on the same day by the U.S. forces that the fire had been brought under control.
