JCP condemns airstrike in Syria ordered by Biden administration

February 27, 2021
Japanese Communist Party Chair Shii Kazuo on February 26 issued the following comments on the recent airstrike in Syria ordered by the U.S. Biden administration:

(1)
The Pentagon announced on February 25, at President Biden’s direction, the U.S military forces conducted airstrikes against infrastructure utilized by Iranian-backed militant groups in eastern Syria. Although they argued that these strikes were authorized in response to recent attacks against the U.S troops in Iraq, this assault violates the Charter of the United Nations and international law, and we condemn that the U.S unilaterally conducting airstrikes in a foreign territory without a UN resolution.

(2)
This is the first military attack abroad ordered by the Biden administration. It will escalate tensions in the area and hamper international efforts to stabilize the regional situations, including diplomatic efforts to solve Iran nuclear issue.

(3)
The U.S has been chiefly responsible for creating the unique difficulties in peacebuilding in the Middle East especially since the War in Iraq in 2003. The JCP strongly hopes that the Biden administration will re-examine actions taken by successive U.S administrations which failed to stabilize the situation in the region due to its reliance on military strategies, and will begin to make efforts in earnest to find diplomatic resolutions to pressing issues.
