April 6, 2021

A united opposition candidate won in the Kodaira City mayoral election on April 4, defeating her rival backed by the Liberal Democratic Party and the Komei Party.

Kobayashi Yoko supported by the Japanese Communist Party, the Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan, the Democratic Party for the People, and the Seikatsusha Net received 32,180 votes or 52.93% of total vote cast. She said she will carry on the municipal administration led by the former mayor who was also supported by the opposition parties.

The mayor-elect, at her campaign office after the election, expressed her determination before supporters to work hard to realize her manifesto consisting of 87 policies which she had drawn up together with citizens. The policies include COVID-19 countermeasures, disaster preparedness, and childrearing and child-support measures.
