JCP and CDPJ agree to start talks on electoral cooperation in Upper House single-seat districts

March 19, 2022
Japanese Communist Party Chair Shii Kazuo on March 18 met with Izumi Kenta, head of the Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan, in the Diet building and agreed on the start of negotiations regarding the selection of joint candidates in single-seat constituencies in the forthcoming House of Councilors election.

After the meeting, JCP Chair Shii held a press conference and said, "A 'kick-off' agreement has been made today toward the coordination of candidates in Upper House single-seat constituencies. Based on this agreement, we'd like to swiftly commence vigorous negotiations."

Shii expressed his determination to develop bilateral cooperation in accordance with the agreement the JCP had concluded with the CDPJ to form a new government as well as with the "20-item common policy agenda” the two parties had agreed upon with the Civil Alliance. He stressed the need for the two parties to adhere to the principle of "mutual respect on an equal footing" in conducting electoral cooperation.

Referring to the fact that Prime Minister Kishida Fumio at the recent Liberal Democratic Party convention showed his eagerness to accelerate the process to amend the Constitution, Shii said, "The JCP will make more efforts so that 'opposition to LDP's constitutional revisions' can be a common policy of the two parties."
