JCP: Japan should use diplomacy to increase global support for an end to Russia’s military operation in Ukraine

March 17, 2022
Japanese Communist Party representative Kokuta Keiji on March 16 at a Diet meeting said that the Japanese government should encourage the 47 countries which abstained from or walked out of the voting on the UN General Assembly resolution calling for Russia’s immediate and unconditional withdrawal from Ukraine to reverse their stance and demand a stop to Russia’s military operation.

At the Lower House Foreign Affairs Committee meeting, Kokuta pointed out that the UNGA resolution was supported by 141 out of the 193 member states, which indicates that the resolution represents the voices of the international community calling for a halt to Russia’s war in Ukraine.

At the same time, the JCP lawmaker noted that while 35 countries abstained from voting, 12 countries did not participate in the vote. He said, “Japan should work to persuade the 47 countries to change their position to one condemning Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and calling for a stop to the intervention. As a nation having the war-renouncing Article 9 of the Constitution, Japan should carry out diplomatic activities to achieve this.”

Foreign Minister Hayashi Yoshimasa in reply said that the need is for Japan to make tenacious efforts in the field of diplomacy by taking into account its relations with the 47 countries.
