JCP donates more than \ 27 million to Red Cross for Ukraine

April 9, 2022

Japanese Communist Party Vice Chair Kurabayashi Akiko and JCP member of the Upper House Takeda Ryosuke on April 8 handed to the Japanese Red Cross Society (JRC) in Tokyo more than 27 million yen in donations the party received from around Japan to support the people in Ukraine.

They held talks with JRC President Otsuka Yoshiharu, JRC international department chief Tanaka Yasuo, and Regis Savioz of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), head of the delegation in Japan.

Savioz said that as many as 7.5 million people are internally displaced now in Ukraine and 4.3 million people have fled from Ukraine, and that adherence to international humanitarian law is very important in order to prevent further civilian casualties.

Tanaka who just returned from Poland which has so far accepted 60% of Ukrainian refugees said, "We must consider the possible mid- and long-term issues related to access to education and livelihoods."

Kurabayashi, referring to an alleged Russian attack on Red Cross vehicles, stated, "It was an act violating humanitarian law." She said that the money is part of public demands calling for compliance with humanitarian law, the UN Charter, and international law, and we hope this money will be used for humanitarian aid efforts in Ukraine."
