Shii meets with ICRC representative

April 13, 2022
Japanese Communist Party Chair Shii Kazuo on April 12 received a visit by Regis Savioz of the International Committee for the Red Cross (ICRC), head of the Red Cross delegation in Japan, in the Diet building and exchanged views on issues related to the Ukraine crisis.

Shii told Savioz that the JCP is going to send more than 16 million yen, the second round of donations the party received nationwide, to the ICRC via the Japanese Red Cross Society.

Savioz thanked the JCP for the donations and said that people of all generations in Ukraine are now in a difficult situation in regard to food, water, electricity, and communication tools. He said, "Everyone no longer believes that nuclear weapons are a part of security," but expressed his concern over the growing danger of an actual use of nuclear weapons.

Shii said that the JCP has always supported the call for the elimination of nuclear weapons and has been pressing the Japanese government to join the UN Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons.

Shii condemned the reported killing of civilians in Bucha in Ukuraine as a war crime. Savioz in response shared some of the tragedies that ICRC staff are witnessing there every day.

Shii expressed his respect for the ICRC's efforts to provide assistance based on the Geneva Conventions. He said that the Geneva Conventions are rules by which all countries must abide irrespective of the cause of a conflict, adding that the ICRC's policy to eliminate inhumane weapons in accordance with these rules is "very encouraging".

He said, "In order to put an end to the Russia-Ukraine war, it is important for the international community to do everything possible to stop Russia's invasion and bring the aggressor to justice. An end to the fighting accompanied by a recovery of the world peace order based on the UN Charter will also be important." He went on to say, "Our party hopes to cooperate with you to save as many lives as possible."
