JCP Kasai talks online with EU parliamentarians over Russia's invasion of Ukraine

April 29, 2022
Japanese Communist Party member of the House of Representatives Kasai Akira on April 28 attended an online meeting held between the Japan-EU parliamentary friendship league and an Europarliament group to exchange views on Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

Kasai said that it is unpardonable for the Russian government to continue violating the UN Charter which prohibits the use of force and to have attacked a hospital and a nuclear power plant in Ukraine in complete disregard of international humanitarian law while threatening to use nuclear weapons.

Kasai said that he is a second-generation Hibakusha and that he hopes the international community will band together to not allow a recurrence of the tragedy Hiroshima and Nagasaki had experienced, not tolerate hegemonic acts taken by any country, and have Russia stop its invasion. He stressed the need to bring the aggressor to justice and recover a world peace order based on the UN Charter.

Kasai also stressed the importance for Japan to provide non-military assistance to Ukraine. He said that the amount of donations the JCP had received from across Japan exceeds 150 million yen and that the party already delivered the donations to the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the UN Children's Fund (UNICEF), the International Committee for the Red Cross (ICRC), and the UN World Food Programme (WFP).

The Japanese and EU lawmakers' groups issued a joint statement denouncing Russia on April 20.
