The Civil Alliance on June 10 met with Japanese Communist Party executives in the Diet building and handed a policy request to the party, calling for cooperation among constitutional opposition parties in order to drive the LDP-Komei government into a minority position in the House of Councilors election slated for July.
JCP Executive Committee Chair Tamura Tomoko responded that she “will squarely accept their request that opposition parties unite in the Upper House election,” and explained the party’s policy and basic stance toward the election.
Tamura said, “A landmark change in regard to many political issues was achieved,” as a result of the last year’s general election in which the ruling LDP-Komei coalition lost their majority, and stressed, “To carry this trend forward, we must put the LDP-Komei force into a minority position in the upcoming national election.” She said that she will do everything to keep this positive momentum going.
JCP Secretariat Head Koike Akira pointed out, “In addition to an increase in the number of JCP seats, a victory of the joint effort made by constitutional opposition parties in single-seat constituencies is crucial to forcing the LDP-Komei camp into a minority position.”
However, he added that the constitutional opposition parties have yet to confirm their willingness to cooperate with each other, and expressed his commitment to realizing their confirmation to work together as soon as possible.
The policy request submitted by the Civil Alliance includes:
- A society not based on war and violence;
- A life-first society; and
- A society that respects the dignity of all individuals.
