Member, House of Representatives of Japan

As the engagement between the two countries that began with Israel's unlawful preemptive attack on Iran continues, the U.S. Trump administration, which supports Israel, is reportedly considering a military strike on Iran. If carried out, such use of force would constitute a clear violation of the UN Charter and international law. It would also deal a serious blow to peace and stability in the Middle East region and beyond. This is absolutely unacceptable. We strongly urge the U.S. to immediately halt any consideration of an attack on Iran.
In particular, an attack on nuclear facilities would violate numerous international laws, including the Geneva Conventions. It could cause serious radioactive leakage and long-term environmental contamination. Furthermore, there are grave concerns about humanitarian damage to the nearby residents and transnational communities. Such an action is wholly unacceptable. We emphasize that a diplomatic and peaceful solution is the only viable way to address Iran’s nuclear issue.
Israel's unauthorized attack on Iran carried out amid renewed genocidal military actions in Gaza and intensified violent settlement activity in the West Bank—can be directly linked to the ongoing military and political backing provided to the Netanyahu government by the Trump administration. We urge the U.S. to fundamentally reconsider its position on Israel.
In a statement issued by the Foreign Minister on the June 13, the Japanese government stated the Israeli attack "is unacceptable and extremely regrettable, and we strongly condemn this action.” If the government stands by this position, it should strongly urge Israel as well as the U.S. to exercise restraint and comply with international law. A firm diplomatic stance should be maintained to prevent the escalation of war.
