The government on June 27 announced its plan to construct bomb shelters on Okinawa’s Sakishima Islands (Miyakojima City, Ishigaki City, Taketomi Town, Yonaguni Town, and Tarama Village) under the assumption that as a result of an armed clash with China, the Nansei Archipelago which includes the Sakishima Islands would become a battlefield. The government explains that the construction of shelters is part of its policy of evacuating 120,000 people from the Sakishima Islands (110,000 residents and 10,000 tourists) to Yamaguchi Prefecture and seven prefectures in the Kyushu Region in the event of an emergency where an armed attack is imminent, and that those shelters will be used by people who failed to escape in time.
Under the newly-announced plan, the construction of a bomb shelter in Yonaguni Town will be completed around spring 2028 at the earliest. The construction work in Miyakojima City will start this winter and construction in Taketomi Town, Ishigaki City, and Tarama Village will begin after 2026. Regarding the construction work in these municipalities, the government gave no scheduled completion date.
The U.S. military is fomenting a danger in an anticipated “Taiwan contingency” by claiming that China will build the capability to invade Taiwan by 2027, and is urging Japan to move toward a huge military expansion. If the U.S. military’s forecast is correct, the Nansei Islands will be dragged into war before proper preparations, including the construction of bomb shelters, are made.
In the first place, if Japan is embroiled in a military confrontation between the U.S. and China, it will become a target by missile strikes, which means that no place in Japan would be safe.
The government uses Russia’s invasion of Ukraine to hype up the “China threat” by saying, “Ukraine is tomorrow’s East Asia.” So, what if an emergency happens “tomorrow” as the government forewarns? Residents would basically be abandoned.
The only way to avoid this situation is to prevent war from occurring through diplomatic efforts. Continually engaging in such efforts will make war preparedness unnecessary.
