Kira Yoshiko of the Japanese Communist Party, who won a seat in the Tokyo constituency where 32 candidates contested for seven seats in the July 20 House of Councillors election, received the most support from women and unaffiliated voters.
This fact was found in exit polls conducted by the Asahi Shimbun and Kyodo News, respectively.
According to an exit poll reported on the Asahi Shimbun dated July 22, Kira received 11% of the women’s votes, making her the most popular choice among female voters. Meanwhile, the top choice among male voters was for Saya (13%), a candidate of the far-right party “Sanseito”.
The same poll shows that Kira and a candidate of the Democratic Party for the People were the top-vote getters among independent voters (9%).
A Kyodo News exit poll also indicated similar results, with Kira receiving the most support from women and Saya of the Sanseito receiving the most support from men.
In the same Kyodo poll, among those who do not have a party to support, the largest number (11.0%) voted for Kira, followed by 9.8% for the Democratic Party for the People candidate.
