JCP EC Chair criticizes gov’t for disregarding UN nuclear weapons ban treaty

August 7, 2025
Japanese Communist Party Executive Committee Chair Tamura Tomoko on August 6 criticized Prime Minister Ishiba Shigeru for ignoring the UN Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW) at the Hiroshima City-hosted peace memorial ceremony held earlier on the day.

She said, “It is unacceptable for the Japanese government to disregard the TPNW and treat it as if it hardly exists. Together with citizens concerned, we urge the government to take the UN treaty seriously and ratify the treaty.”

She made these remarks at a press conference in Hiroshima City.

Tamura referred to the Peace Declaration and a speech delivered by Hiroshima City Mayor Matsui Kazumi and Governor Yuzaki Hidehiko, respectively, at the peace memorial ceremony. She pointed out, “The two statements squarely condemned the ‘nuclear deterrence’ doctrine, and warned that if deterrence is broken down, it will bring about a catastrophe for all of humanity and most of life on planet Earth.” She said, “While the TPNW changes the world, the Japanese government doesn’t change.”

Tamura talked about her participation in the 2025 World Conference against A and H Bombs, and stressed, “I actually felt that civil society is bringing hope to the world to achieve the abolition of nuclear weapons.” She said, “With nuclear risks increasing, the TPNW is now in the mainstream of discussion and bringing the world through Hibakusha’s tireless efforts to speak about their experiences.”
