According to South Korean media reports, the Family Federation for World Peace and Unification, known as the Unification Church (aka Moonies), allegedly offered bribes to the former South Korean president’s wife in the hope of receiving support in return. Han Hak-ja, the church leader, is suspected of involvement in the bribery.
The antisocial religious cult also cultivated close ties primarily with Liberal Democratic Party politicians in Japan.
The late former Prime Minister Abe Shinzo, for example, went so far as to send a video message to a large meeting of the church’s front organization Universal Peace Federation (UPF) held in September 2021.
The Moonies provided support for election campaigns of not only Abe but also many other LDP candidates. Some were even invited to speak at Moonies-related events.
The LDP instructed its lawmakers to conduct self-assessments to determine if they had come in contact with the Unification Church. The party then made public the survey results but disclosed only four names, including present Prime Minister Ishiba Shigeru, as having received political donations or donations through fundraising parties from the cult. The LDP’s self-assessment was extremely inadequate.
The LDP will hold its presidential election on October 4. Among the presidential candidates are parliamentarians who had connections with the antisocial group. The LDP is once again being tested if it has the stomach to uncover the whole truth behind its cozy relationship with the Unification Church.
