Japanese Communist Party Secretariat Head Koike Akira on October 27 attended a forum held in the Diet building to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the foundation of the United Nations, and exchanged views on multilateralism with both ruling and opposition party lawmakers.
The forum was hosted by the cross-party Dietmembers’ organization, Japanese Diet Committee for World Federalist Movement, with attendance of United Nations University Director Tshilidzi Marwala and United Nations Resident Coordinator in China, Siddharth Chatterjee, as speakers.
Marwala stressed that individual actions taken by all people, including the participants in the forum, is necessary to force the implementation of the UN Charter. Chatterjee warned that the move toward multilateralism is now being threatened.
Koike noted that UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in his UN Day speech delivered on October 24 said, “The United Nations is more than an institution. It is a living promise - spanning borders, bridging continents, inspiring generations.” The JCP lawmaker pointed out that the UN has played a significant part in efforts to protect peace and human rights as well as to eradicate poverty and hunger. Stating that the Universal Declaration of Human Rights is alive in the postwar Japanese Constitution, Koke said, “We, as Dietmembers, need to devote ourselves to truly realize the spirit of the declaration.”
Regarding multilateralism, Koike said that aiming to make the Indo-Pacific region a region of dialogue and cooperation, not confrontation, ASEAN proposed the ASEAN Outlook on the Indo-Pacific (AOIP), and stressed that this is a very important framework to engage in peacebuilding efforts. He demanded that the Japanese government join the AOIP framework, and that a regional framework for peace which embraces China be created.
