Japanese Communist Party Secretariat Head Koike Akira, at a press conference held in the Diet building on November 4, criticized Prime Minister Takaichi Sanae who during a Lower House plenary session expressed her determination to revise the Constitution. Koike stated, “It is absolutely unacceptable and violates Article 99 of the Constitution which obliges public officials to respect and uphold the Constitution.”
Earlier on the same day, interpellations by representatives of political parties regarding PM Takaichi’s policy speech began at the House of Representatives plenary session.
Takaichi, in response to LDP Policy Chief Kobayashi Takayuki who used his question time to urge Takaichi to demonstrate her “determination” for constitutional revision, stated, “Establishing a constitution that can meet the demands of the times is an urgent task.” She expressed her determination “to work with full commitment to proposing an amendment bill in cooperation with all like-minded parties and political groups” in order to “create an environment so that a national referendum on constitutional revision can be held at the earliest possible date.”
