Japanese Communist Party Executive Committee Chair Tamura Tomoko, at a press conference in the Diet building on November 5, stated that Prime Minister Takaichi Sanae’s response to questions Tamura made earlier that day demonstrated that the Takaichi government “does not care about the lives of the people but will obediently follow the lead of the United States.”
Tamura said that in her questioning, she asked how the Takaichi government would respond to the people’s judgement delivered in the election, and that Takaichi merely repeated her previous responses regarding both the slush-fund issue and a reduction in the consumption tax rate. Tamura added, “If the government won’t implement cash handouts of 20,000 yen, the only option is to cut the consumption tax rate, but PM Takaichi refuses to do so. This means that her regime has no intention of alleviating the suffering being experienced by many people from inflation and rising prices.”
Regarding Tamura’s accusation that the Takaichi-led LDP government is subservient to the United States, PM Takaichi said, “That accusation is unfounded.” However, Tamura noted, “Takaichi in responding to my criticism did not refer to any measures to address the problem of sexual violence committed by U.S. military personnel in Japan and the danger posed by U.S. military training exercises.” Tamura also noted that Takaichi couldn’t even answer why she hadn’t mentioned revising the Japan-U.S. Status of Forces Agreement (SOFA) during her meeting with U.S. President Trump, and pointed out that it was because Takaichi takes a completely subservient stance toward the U.S. government.
Tamura specifically pointed out that Takaichi neither protested nor criticized President Trump for ordering the resumption of nuclear testing and calling climate crisis measures a scam. Tamura stated, “Takaichi government’s subservience to the U.S. has become crystal clear.”
