LDP and Ishin aim to advance moves for constitutional revision

December 6 & 7, 2025

The Liberal Democratic Party and the “Nippon Ishin no Kai” party intend to begin the process of drafting constitutional revisions during the next ordinary Diet session.

At a free debate in the House of Representatives Commission on the Constitution on December 4, LDP lawmaker Funada Hajime expressed his desire to establish a constitutional revision drafting committee, a commitment that the LDP and Ishin made when forming their coalition government. Ishin lawmaker Baba Nobuyuki said, “We should promptly begin preparing an original draft for constitutional amendment.”

Akamine Seiken of the Japanese Communist Party criticized them, saying, “It is absolutely unacceptable to forcibly advance with discussions on constitutional revision when the majority of the public opposing it.” He continued, “What the legislature should be debating is how to put an end to ‘money power politics’ that tramples upon the principles of the Constitution, not pushing for constitutional revision.”

Matsuo Akihiro of the Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan said, “We cannot accept the immediate establishment of a drafting committee for constitutional revision.”

Akamine criticized the ongoing military buildup with a “Taiwan contingency” in mind, saying, “We should discuss how to advance preparations for peace in the Budget Committee and standing committees, not preparations for war.”

He noted that Prime Minister Takaichi Sanae the other day mentioned that a “Taiwan contingency” could constitute a “survival-threatening situation” for Japan. He added, “Once a contingency arises, Okinawa, where U.S. military and Self-Defense Force bases are concentrated, would be the first target of attack.” He asserted, “The Taiwan issue should be resolved peacefully through discussions between China and Taiwan.”
