JCP and Civil Alliance agree to continue with their joint efforts

January 23, 2026
Japanese Communist Party Secretariat Head Koike Akira held talks with the Civil Alliance in the Diet building on January 22. Both sides agreed to continue their cooperation.

The Civil Alliance handed to Koike a policy request ahead of next month’s general election.

Koike, receiving the written request, stressed, “It is necessary to keep on advancing the joint struggle between concerned citizens and opposition parties in order to change policies implemented by the Liberal Democratic Party.” In the meanwhile, Koike pointed out that the Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan, by forming the “Centrist Reform Alliance (CRA)” with the “Komeito” party, completely discarded its policy calling for abolishing the national security-related legislation. Furthermore, Koike continued, the CDPJ accepted a massive military expansion policy which the Komeito used to push forward as the LDP’s coalition partner. He criticized the CDPJ for no longer being in a position to advocate for a progressive change in government.

Koike said, “To block the Takaichi government’s reckless policies and fundamentally shift away from LDP politics, what is important is to expand the pro-Constitution forces within the Diet.” He added that the JCP will promote further collaboration with the Social Democratic Party and the New Socialist Party of Japan.

The Civil Alliance showed an understanding of the JCP policy regarding opposition parties’ joint struggle, and said that the important thing is to confront the Takaichi government and drive it into a corner. It also expressed its determination to carefully evaluate the policy positions which will be taken by the CRA as well as by other political parties after the general election.
