The Japanese Communist Party and the Social Democratic Party held a meeting in the Diet building on February 27, confirming that they will further strengthen their cooperation in order to counter the Takaichi government’s dangerous moves.
JCP Executive Committee Chair Tamura Tomoko pointed out that with the Liberal Democratic Party holding two-thirds of the House of Representatives seats, “A significant number of people are feeling a strong sense of crisis about the potential adverse revision of the Constitution.” She stressed the need to intensify their activities both inside and outside the Diet to prevent this from becoming a reality.
Fukushima Mizuho, leader of the SDP, stated, “I hope this exchange meeting will strengthen our activities and networks. Going forward, the SDP will call on various people to join in our activities.”
Both parties confirmed that they will coordinate more closely to counter the ruling coalition’s high-handed Diet management and ominous moves, such as adverse revision of the Constitution and the enactment of an anti-espionage law. In order to expand their cooperation further, they also agreed to reach out to other political groups and lawmakers who are concerned about the “Takaichi dominance”.
Those attending the meeting included JCP Secretariat Head Koike Akira, JCP Diet Affairs Committee Chair Shiokawa Tetsuya, SDP Deputy Leader LaSalle Ishii, and House of Councillors member Nagae Takako (independent).
