Japanese Communist Party Policy Commission Chair Yamazoe Taku, at a press conference in the Diet building on March 6, stressed that in a Japan-U.S. summit meeting scheduled for later this month, Prime Minister Takaichi Sanae should talk with President Donald Trump with “a diplomatic stance which strongly calls for a halt to the lawless war of aggression in Iran”.
Yamazoe also stated, “In the meeting, if asked by the U.S. side to respond to favorably to U.S. expectations, PM Takaichi must not accept such a request.”
Yamazoe noted that President Trump has said that U.S. Navy warships will escort oil tankers transiting the Strait of Hormuz.
The JCP Policy Commission chair pointed out that it is highly likely that the U.S. will ask its allies for cooperation and request Japan to take some kind of action. He emphasized, “It is totally unacceptable for a situation to develop where the Self-Defense Forces is asked to be mobilized to support the U.S. and Israel in the U.S. lawless war against Iran.”
Yamazoe pointed out that although PM Takaichi condemned Iran’s attack on civilian facilities, she avoided making a legal assessment of the U.S.-Israeli attack on Iran.
He pointed out, “Attacks on civilians and civilian facilities are impermissible regardless of who is in charge, and they are in clear violation of international law.” He criticized PM Takaichi’s posture of condemning Iran’s act while saying nothing about the U.S.-Israeli bombings of schools and hospitals in Iran.
