Prime Minister Takaichi Sanae, at the Japan-U.S. summit meeting held on March 19 at the White House, neither protested against the ongoing war on Iran nor demanded an immediate ceasefire. At the same time, she paid excessive compliments to President Donald Trump, saying, “I firmly believe that it is you, Donald, who can achieve peace across the world. To do so, I am ready to reach out to many of the partners in the international community to achieve our objective together.”
Japanese Communist Party Executive Committee Chair Tamura Tomoko, at a press conference at the JCP head office on March 20, pointed out that PM Takaichi’s flattering remark given to President Trump is tantamount to a declaration of support for the U.S.-Israeli attack on Iran, adding, “Such subservience to the United States is unacceptable.”
Stating that a recent opinion poll in Japan showed that 80% of respondents “did not support” the U.S.-Israeli lawless war on Iran, Tamura said that PM Takaichi’s remark praising President Trump disregarded public opinion.
Tamura expressed her determination by saying, “The JCP will work to ensure the UN Charter and international law are not mere formalities and to increase international solidarity by joining hands with world’s governments and the domestic movement which pursue an international order of peace.”
Tamura noted that President Trump in his remark regarding the dispatch of warships to the Hormuz Strait praised Japan for “stepping up to the plate” unlike NATO allies, and that after the summit meeting PM Takaichi said to the press that she explained to the president in detail “what Japan can and cannot do”. Tamura said that PM Takaichi should fulfill her accountability for the public in this regard.
Talking about the energy crisis triggered by the partial closing of the Strait of Hormuz, Tamura stressed the need to urge Washington and Tel Aviv to stop their military operations against Iran. Nevertheless, she pointed out that PM Takaichi in her talks with Trump failed to even mention the need to halt the war on Iran, appearing to be negative about tackling the energy crisis.
Tamura pointed out that the two leaders affirmed that they will advance a wide range of “security cooperation”, including co-development and co-production of missiles. She said that strengthening the Japan-U.S. alliance under the Trump administration is extremely harmful to Japan’s peace and stability.
