Japanese Communist Party Executive Committee Chair Tamura Tomoko on March 18 urgently requested that Prime Minister Takaichi urge U.S. President Trump at the Japan-U.S. summit to stop the military attack on Iran.
Tamura pointed out that Trump has not provided a clear and justifiable reason for the unprovoked attack. She noted that the IAEA stated that there was no imminent threat regarding Iran’s nuclear development program, contrary to Trump’s initial claims. She also noted that it was the United States that unilaterally terminated the U.S.-Iran nuclear talks and preemptively launched the war. She stated that this is “a rejection of diplomatic negotiations and thus should be strongly condemned.”
Tamura said, “Trump is demanding that Japan and several other countries dispatch warships to ensure ‘safe sea traffic’ through the Strait of Hormuz, but this is utterly absurd.” Citing the fact that NATO countries have rejected this demand, she emphasized that Japan “should also refuse to deploy SDF vessels there.” She added that the government should prevent U.S. military bases located in Japan from being used for the ongoing war of aggression against Iran.
Furthermore, given that Japan has the war-renouncing Article 9 of the Constitution, Tamura demanded that the government demonstrate to the general public and to the international community its stance of not tolerating “rule by force” and its commitment to complying with the UN Charter and international law.
She argued that if the government cannot do these things, it should not hold a Japan-U.S. summit meeting.
