Japanese Communist Party Executive Committee Chair Tamura Tomoko on May 14 at a press conference announced that the JCP requested Prime Minister Takaichi Sanae to implement emergency measures to protect people’s livelihoods and business operations from the serious negative impacts of rising prices and material shortages caused by the ongoing Iran War.
The measures that the JCP is calling for are as follows:
- compile a supplementary budget immediately to protect people’s livelihoods from the skyrocketing cost of living and implement bold measures without delay;
- secure procurement of goods in areas essential to people’s daily lives such as healthcare, food, transport and logistics, and construction;
- provide support to small and medium-sized enterprises struggling with rising costs and interest rates so that they can maintain their jobs;
- accurately assess the supply and demand for crude oil and petroleum-related products, and take responsibility for ensuring a stable supply and price stability; and
- make efforts to reduce demand for petroleum-derived components and raw materials, while strengthening policies on energy saving as well as on renewable energy incorporating mid- and long-term perspectives.
Tamura pointed out that the U.S.-Israeli unprovoked war of aggression against Iran has delivered serious negative impacts on Japan’s economy and people’s daily lives. Stating, “The best course of action is to bring the war to an end as soon as possible,” she stressed that the Japanese government should strongly call on the U.S. and Israel to carry out diplomatic negotiations to bring the war to an end. She also demanded that the Japanese government enhance its diplomatic efforts in collaboration with the international community to persuade the U.S., Israel, and Iran to reach an agreement to end the war with the assurance that the U.S. will not conduct further attacks alongside Israel.
Furthermore, Tamura said that along with measures taken by the market supply chain and individual companies, swift and drastic countermeasures are needed to protect people’s livelihoods and business operations, adding that the government should respond to the JCP request.
