Shii speaks to academics about his exchange with progressive forces in US and Canada

May 17, 2026

Japanese Communist Party Central Committee Chair Shii Kazuo made a presentation regarding his visit to the United States and Canada (April 23-May 6) at a gathering of academics held on May 16 at the JCP head office. This was live-streamed on the Internet and attracted about 5,000 viewers.

Shii visited the U.S. and Canada as the head of the JCP delegation, on the occasion of the 2026 NPT Review Conference, with the aim of making a contribution to a positive outcome to be achieved by the conference toward a world without nuclear weapons; building full-fledged solidarity with left-wing, progressive forces in the U.S., such as the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA); and holding theoretical exchanges based on the developed JCP theory on freedom with progressive forces in the two countries.

In his presentation, Shii said that what he found during his visit was that the JCP’s programmatic line is demonstrating vitality in the 21st Century in terms of the party’s worldview, its policy regarding democratic revolution, and its theory of a future society.

Yokohama National University Professor Emeritus Hagiwara Shinjiro in his feedback to Shii pointed out that aiming for the success of the NPT Review Conference, the JCP made a concrete proposal which could gain many countries’ approval, adding that this has major international significance.

Hagiwara also stressed that it is “truly a historic milestone” that the JCP stepped toward establishing solidarity and communication with left-wing, progressive forces in the U.S. Regarding theoretical exchanges on scientific socialism between the JCP and these forces, Professor Hagiwara emphasized the importance that the JCP’s theory concerning “freely disposable time” resonated with DSA members and other progressive activists.
