Japanese Communist Party Central Committee Chair Shii Kazuo on May 29 met with Cuban Ambassador to Japan Gisela Garcia in Tokyo.
Shii stated that Ernesto Sobreron, the Cuban ambassador to the United Nations, had offered the JCP delegation his warm and generous support during the NPT Review Conference at the UN Headquarters in NYC to help to ensure the conference’s success. Shii expressed his heartfelt gratitude for this support.
Ambassador Garcia showed her appreciation for the JCP’s strong criticism of the U.S. fuel embargo as “collective punishment” in violation of international law, and for the party’s call for the sanctions to be lifted.
She noted that, combined with the 67 years of U.S. economic embargo, the Cuban people are at the point of reaching their limit of endurance. She also explained the political and material support that Cuba has received from the international community, and praised the Japanese government’s decision to provide one billion yen in aid for installing solar panels at hospitals in Cuba. She described this as “extremely effective support”.
Shii responded that the JCP will urge the government to provide even more aid. He added that the party will work hard so that the general public can learn of the current situation in Cuba, hoping that support and solidarity will spread among the general public in defense of Cuba’s sovereignty and independence and that this awareness may help to resolve the present crisis.
