Shii comments on entry into force of US-Iran memorandum of understanding

June 19, 2026

Signed by U.S. President Trump and Iranian President Pezeshkian, a memorandum of understanding to end the fighting came into effective on June 17.

Regarding this move, Japanese Communist Party Central Committee Chair Shii Kazuo on June 18 made a comment on his X account.

In his comment, Shii noted that the U.S.-Iran memorandum states that the United States of America and the Islamic Republic of Iran “undertake to respect each other's sovereignty and territorial integrity, and to refrain from interfering in each other's internal affairs.” He wrote, “This means the failure of the lawless war which the U.S. started in pursuit of ‘regime change’ in Iran. I strongly hope that the two countries will reach a final agreement in the direction shown in the memorandum and restore peace and stability.”

Shii posted another comment on his X account on June 16 in regard to the memorandum.

In his comment two days earlier, Shii pointed out, “The United States had ‘nothing to gain’ from its unlawful war and ended up causing its own ruin.” He continued to write, “The U.S. failed to achieve its strategic goals. In addition, through its war of aggression against Iran which violates international law and includes the killing of children, the U.S. has become increasingly isolated in the international community. Regarding the opening of the Strait of Hormuz, the U.S. boasts about this, but the pre-war situation in regard to the strait has merely been reinstated.”
