The Japanese Communist Party on July 18 held a meeting to commemorate the 104th anniversary of the party’s founding, connecting the JCP head office with many locations across the country online.
At the outset of the meeting, JCP Executive Committee Chair Tamura Tomoko stated, “We are living in a very important era in which we are being asked what path to choose and how to forge it. I hope this meeting will serve as an opportunity for us to reflect together on how we should live in this era.”
Tamura noted that capitalism’s contradictions, such as the widening wealth gap and the climate crisis, threaten the “freedom of human survival”, and posed the question, “Should we continue with the capitalist system as it is or should we aim for a future society that transcends it?” She pointed out that many people today are searching for a vision of a future society that transitions away from capitalism.
She said that the JCP holds the view that “human freedom” is the ultimate goal of socialism and communism and their most distinctive feature. She continued, “Marx’s vision of a future society centered on ‘freely disposable time’ has the potential to address the various hardships that many people experience in their daily lives.” She added that the concept of “free time” offers a clue to solving present-day problems such as gender inequality, the climate crisis, and AI-related issues.
Tamura noted that more than 8,000 JCP branches nationwide are studying together with their branch members books written by JCP Central Committee Chair Shii Kazuo on “communism and freedom”, “an introduction to Capital”, as well as “free time and Capital”. She stated that studying the classics of scientific socialism, which identify and explain the laws of social development, provides a compass for life and makes life meaningful.
Calling on the audience to join the JCP, she said, “JCP members and supporters have been tenaciously fighting to attract a majority of the general public to supporting the JCP vision for a future society, no matter how difficult the circumstances,” Following this meeting, the JCP held membership orientation gatherings nationwide, resulting in over 60 new members joining the party.
