Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Yana Kazuo submitted his resignation to Prime Minister Takaichi Sanae on October 14. Yana came under fire for suggesting that he had reduced road budgets for municipalities whose mayors did not support him in the February general election.
Japanese Communist Party Executive Committee Chair Tamura Tomoko held a press conference in the JCP head office on the same day and stated, “His resignation is a matter of course. PM Takaichi should also be held accountable for not immediately dismissing Yana.”
Tamura noted that PM Takaichi did not address this issue in her policy speech to the current extraordinary session of the Diet, and criticized the prime minister for continuing to defend Yana and her intent to keep him in office despite the growing public criticism of his “budget cut” remarks.
Tamura stated that an investigation is needed into the reduction of road budgets in Nasukarasuyama City and Nakagawa Town in Yana’s electoral prefecture of Tochigi. The JCP chair expressed the party’s determination to demand that the government conduct an investigation to uncover the truth.
