Civil Alliance urges JCP to unite opposition parties

October 16, 2026

Japanese Communist Party Executive Committee Chair Tamura Tomoko and JCP Secretariat Head Koike Akira met with representatives of the “Civil Alliance for Peace and Constitutionalism” in the Diet building on October 15.

The Civil Alliance presented Tamura and Koike with a petition demanding the prevention of constitutional revision, further military expansion, and a reduction in the number of Diet seats.

Tamura expressed her agreement with the petition’s demands, stating, “We will continue to stand in unwavering solidarity with you.”

Tamura informed the Civil Alliance that the opposition parties have agreed to block the ruling parties’ attempt to pass a bill reducing the number of proportional representation seats in the Lower House during the current extraordinary session of the Diet. She added, “Working together on common ground is our party’s consistent policy.”

Tamura explained that the draft Resolution for the 30th JCP Congress, which was presented at the 10th Central Committee Plenum on October 14, clearly specifies a policy of changing politics through national cooperation and unity, that is, through a united front. She said that building a broad coalition will impede the government’s plan to turn Japan into a war-capable state.

Adding to Tamura’s remarks, Koike said, “The JCP Program also clearly states that political change should begin ‘with forming a consensus among a majority of the people’.”

Tatara Satoshi, a Civil Alliance co-head, referred to the issue of former Agriculture Minister Yana who resigned following his “budget cut” remarks, and condemned this case as a blatant violation of administrative fairness and democracy. Tatara said, “The Takaichi government is on shaky ground. If the opposition parties unite and the people back them, it should be possible to bring it down.”
