Don’t use March 11 as excuse to cut jobs: DYLJ

July 9, 2011
The Democratic Youth League of Japan (DYLJ) on July 8 petitioned the Labor Ministry to instruct large corporations not to dismiss young workers or cancel informal job offers to graduates under the guise of an economic downturn associated with the March 11 disaster.

DYLJ Chair Tanaka Yu stressed the need for further measures to prohibit major companies from slashing jobs by referring to its survey results showing that many young workers have lost their jobs or suffered wage cuts in the aftermath of the quake-tsunami disaster.

The DYLJ interviewed young people, ranging in age from late-teens to those in their thirties, in front of 48 Hellowork (the public employment security office) buildings in 22 prefectures.

The DYLJ also demands that the ministry regulate large companies’ illegal labor practices.
