2008 August 20 - 26 [POLITICS]

Extraordinary Diet session to be convened on September 12 for 70 days

August 26, 2008
The government and the ruling coalition of the Liberal Democratic and Komei parties on August 25 reached an agreement to open the next Extraordinary Session of the Diet on September 12 to continue until November 20.

The compromise was needed as Prime Minister Fukuda Yasuo wanted the session to be long enough to ensure that the new Anti-Terrorism Special Measures Law that expires next January will be extended smoothly, while the Komei Party maintained that the term should not be longer than two months.

The prime minister’s policy speech will be delivered on September 12, followed by questionings by party representatives on September 16-18 in both houses of the Diet. - Akahata, August 26, 2008
