PM Takaichi in Hiroshima hints at revising Japan’s 3 non-nuclear principles

August 7, 2026

Prime Minister Takaichi Sanae, when asked whether the Three Non-Nuclear Principles would be altered in the three national security documents due to be revised by the end of the year, said, “I will refrain from prejudging the wording”, thereby hinting at the possibility of a review.

At a press conference on August 6 following the annual peace memorial ceremony hosted by Hiroshima City, PM Takaichi limited herself to stating that the government adheres to the Three Non-Nuclear Principles as a policy direction.

Japanese Communist Party Executive Committee Chair Tamura Tomoko, visiting Hiroshima City, spoke to reporters and was asked for her views on PM Takaichi’s statement that the government adheres to the non-nuclear principles.

Tamura responded, “PM Takaichi merely described the current situation, saying that the government ‘upholds’ the non-nuclear principles. In fact, she never mentions what will happen to the non-nuclear principles in the revised three security documents, or promises that Japan will not revise them.”

Tamura warned that revising the non-nuclear principles to allow the bringing-in of nuclear weapons to Japan would make the country a base for launching U.S. nuclear attacks. She noted that many local assemblies are adopting resolutions one after another calling for adherence to the Three Non-Nuclear Principles, and that every opinion poll shows that the general public overwhelmingly supports maintaining the principles.

Regarding Defense Minister Koizumi Shinjiro’s recent statement that Japan should discuss nuclear weapons without taboos, Tamura said, “The fact that a cabinet minister made such a reckless remark is a sign that the Takaichi government has lost all restraint.” Tamura expressed her determination, saying, “I will do everything to put a stop to the present government’s reckless behavior.”

A-bomb survivor groups in Hiroshima meet with the prime minister following the city-sponsored peace ceremony every year. After the meeting this year, Sakuma Kunihiko of the Hiroshima Hidankyo in an Akahata interview said, “During the meeting, PM Takaichi said the government ‘upholds’ the Three Non-Nuclear Principles. However, as usual, she made no mention of signing and ratifying the UN N-ban treaty. I saw no sign of a commitment to realizing the abolition of nuclear weapons.”
