Y3.5 million handed to WFP from JCP for food aid in Gaza

December 15, 2023

Japanese Communist Party member of the House of Councilors Iwabuchi Tomo on December 14 visited the UN World Food Program (WFP) Japan Relations Office in Tokyo to offer 3,566,999 yen in donations the JCP had collected from throughout Japan for humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip.

Receiving the donations, WFP Japan Relations Office Director Tsumura Yasuhiro said, “We appreciate the donations you have collected in solidarity with the people in Gaza.”

About half of Gaza’s population are now facing starvation due to the devastation and Israel’s blockade. Tsumura said, “This is a human-made disaster. To resolve this situation is the role of politics. In accordance with the humanitarian principle, we will somehow manage to deliver relief goods to Gaza. A ceasefire is our strong demand. The UNGA resolution adopted on December 12 is a big step forward.”

Iwabuchi responded, “We will continue calling on the Japanese government to work to help achieve a ceasefire.”
