January 4 & 5, 2026
Japanese Communist Party Central Committee Chair Shii Kazuo on January 3 issued a statement condemning the U.S. Trump administration’s invasion of Venezuela. On the following day, Shii, in reaction to President Trump’s remark that the U.S. will run Venezuela, posted a comment on his X account.
Shii’s statement and comment (see below) were sent to the UN Secretariat and diplomatic missions in Tokyo which include the embassies of the United States and Venezuela. The documents were also sent to JCP-connected foreign political parties and party leaders.

The full text of Shii’s statement issued on January 3 is as follows:
On January 3, U.S. President Donald Trump stated on social media that [the U.S.] “successfully carried out a large scale strike against Venezuela” and that Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro “has been, along with his wife, captured and flown out of the country.” The Venezuelan government has condemned this as “extremely serious military aggression” by the United States.
Under no circumstances is any country entitled to carry out military attacks against a sovereign state or to detain and forcibly remove its leader.
The actions of the Trump administration constitute an act of aggression that brutally tramples upon the UN Charter and international law. We strongly condemn this and demand that these lawless acts cease immediately.

Trump says U.S. to run Venezuela.
This is nothing less than a declaration of a new form of colonial rule. To openly proclaim, in the 21st century, the revival of a 19th-century relic is an astonishing display of absurdity and historical anachronism.
If Prime Minister Takaichi cannot bring herself to protest this lawlessness, she will have forfeited any moral authority to speak of the “rule of law.”
