A candidate unofficially supported by the Japanese Communist Party won in the mayoral election in Tokyo’s Nerima Ward on April 12, defeating the candidate endorsed by the Liberal Democratic Party, the “Tomin First no Kai” party, the Democratic Party for the People, and the “Tokyo Ishin no Kai” party.
Mayor-elect Yoshida Ken’ichi announced his intention to cancel the current ward administration’s plan to renovate the ward-run art museum, a project costing over 15 billion yen. He said, “I will redirect residents’ tax money to support those suffering from economic distress caused by inflation.”
