Japanese Communist Party Executive Committee Chair Tamura Tomoko received a visit from Iranian Ambassador to Japan Peiman Seadat on July 23 in the JCP anteroom in the Diet building. They discussed the situation surrounding the war in Iran.

Ambassador Seadat argued that despite the signing of a memorandum of understanding with Iran in June, the U.S. Trump administration unilaterally terminated it and resumed large-scale attacks on Iran. The ambassador stated that there have been civilian casualties and damage to social infrastructure, including bridges and medical facilities, but President Trump continues to make inhumane military threats. The ambassador asked the international community not to condone these war crimes.

JCP EC Chair Tamura stated that the resumption of U.S. attacks violates the memorandum which says both countries would “undertake to respect each other’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, and to refrain from interfering in each other’s internal affairs.” She added, “The Trump administration should bear primary responsibility for ending the war, as it has repeatedly violated the UN Charter and international law.”

Tamura expressed her strong hope that the war will end soon, and that the two governments will return to the terms of the memorandum. To achieve this end, she emphasized the need for the international community to encourage the countries that have mediated the Iran-U.S. negotiations to fulfill their roles. Tamura said that the JCP will urge the Japanese government to intensify its diplomatic efforts to bring the war to an end.
