Yamazoe: Japan should uphold the rule of law and oppose US military intervention in Cuba

June 3, 2026
Japanese Communist Party lawmaker Yamazoe Taku, at a meeting of the House of Councillors Committee on Foreign Affairs and Defense on June 2, demanded that the Japanese government provide aid to Cuba, which is facing a humanitarian crisis due to the illegally-imposed U.S. fuel embargo.

He also stated that Japan should declare that it will not tolerate U.S. military intervention in Cuba.

Referring to Japan’s vote in favor of the UN General Assembly resolution calling “for the lifting of the embargo on Cuba” last October, he stressed the need for Japan to provide further humanitarian aid.

Regarding U.S. President Trump’s hints at military action against Cuba, Yamazoe noted that the governments of Brazil, Mexico, and Spain issued a joint declaration in April calling “for sincere, respectful dialogue in accordance with international law and the principles of the United Nations Charter.”

The JCP legislator suggested that Japan adopt a similar stance. In response, Foreign Minister Motegi Toshimitsu simply said, “It is important to resolve issues between nations through diplomatic means.”

Yamazoe referred to the fact that the United States indicted former Cuban President Raul Castro in May, shortly after indicting Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, with the aim of achieving regime change.

Motegi refrained from commenting on the U.S. military operation in Venezuela. Yamazoe criticized the Japanese foreign minister, asking, “Does Japan condone the abduction of a sitting head of state by military force?”

The JCP lawmaker stated that as a country that upholds the rule of law, Japan should declare that it will not tolerate military intervention in Cuba, let alone an invasion of Venezuela.
